If you have a chest port, numbing cream can make a real difference in how you experience access day. But getting the most out of your numbing cream depends on how you apply it, when you apply it, and what you use to keep it in place. Here are some practical tips from patients who have been through it.
Most healthcare providers recommend a topical lidocaine cream or a combination lidocaine-prilocaine cream (commonly known by the brand name EMLA). These are typically available by prescription. Over-the-counter lidocaine creams (usually 4% strength) are also available and may work for some patients. Talk to your doctor about which option is right for you.
More is more when it comes to numbing cream. You want a generous layer; about a dime to quarter-sized amount; applied directly on top of the port. Don’t rub it in. The cream needs to sit on the surface of the skin to penetrate effectively. A thin smear won’t do the job.
Most numbing creams need 30 to 60 minutes to reach their full effect. Plan to apply your cream before you leave home, not when you arrive at the infusion center. If you apply it too late, the cream won’t have had enough time to work. If you apply it too early (beyond the recommended window), the numbing effect may start to wear off.
Here’s where most patients run into trouble. Numbing cream is a thick, wet substance that needs to stay in direct contact with the skin over the port. Traditionally, patients have used plastic wrap to cover it. But plastic wrap doesn’t adhere to skin, it shifts easily, and the cream leaks out from the edges; especially during movement, driving, or when contacted by clothing, seatbelts, or bra straps.
