Applying Port Protect takes three steps: peel off the adhesive backing, place the device over your chest port with the lid open, and apply a generous amount of numbing cream directly onto the port through the opening. Then close the lid and press firmly around the adhesive border. The entire process takes less than a minute.
Port Protect should be worn for 10 minutes to 1 hour before your port is accessed. This gives the numbing cream sufficient time to penetrate the skin and numb the area. Port Protect has not been tested for use beyond one hour, so it is recommended to keep it on for no longer than 60 minutes.
Yes. Port Protect is specifically designed to stay securely in place during normal activity, including driving. Unlike plastic wrap, the medical-grade adhesive prevents the device from shifting when contacted by seatbelts, clothing, or bra straps. Most patients apply Port Protect at home and drive to their infusion appointment with the cream sealed in place.
Yes. Port Protect and all numbing cream must be completely removed and the port site thoroughly cleaned before the nurse accesses your port. This is typically done by the nurse at the infusion center, but patients who remove the device at home should clean the area as directed by their healthcare provider.
